CONQUERING THE GLOCKNERKÖNIG

Every June, thousands of athletes gather in our village of Bruck an der Grossglocknerstrasse with a collective purpose - to become champions of the Glocknerkönig. The Glocknerkönig is an internationally recognised cycling event, in which cyclists take on the mental and physical challenge of cycling from Bruck all the way to Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner.

It's an open event in which amateurs, professionals and hobby cyclists can all take part. All you need is a bicycle (owned or rented), determination, and a great deal of stamina! Do you think you have what it takes to conquer the Glocknerkönig? Secure your place in next year's competition, and a spot at our cosy chalet, which is just 800m from the start line. Still not sure? Then read on to see if one of the easier categories might be for you.

To cater for all levels, competitors can sign up to different categories based on ability...and levels of motivation! The most challenging option is the Glocknerkönig Ultra Trail, which consists of a 1,815m climb over 28.9km from Bruck to the Edelweiss Spitze peak. Perhaps reserved for the hard core athletes amongst us! The Glocknerkönig Classic option is a little easier and a lot more obtainable, with a vertical climb of 1,694m over 27.3km, and the Light option covers a climb of just 1,330m over 12.8km (just...!).

This year marked the 27th edition of the Glocknerkönig competition. Thousands of athletes congregated at the start line in Bruck's centre on Sunday, including many guests staying at our chalet. Early on Sunday morning, the whistle blew and off they went. The athletes weaved up the hair pin turns of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with one goal in mind...the Grossglockner. This year saw a new course record in the classic title, set by Janine Meyer of Germany, and a cracking effort from Pascal Wiederhold, also of Germany, who won the the Ultra title. Thousands of other proud contestants also conquered the course!

If you'd like to see if you have what it takes, or you'd just like to be part of the fun, why not take part in the 28th edition of the Glocknerkönig on June the 1st, 2025. Registration is expected to open in December, but make sure to sign up for event updates here. We offer bicycle rental at the chalet too, so make sure to reserve your bike for the competition.

In the meantime, take a look at some moments captured in last year's competition. Just look those smiles!
