LAKE ZELL
Austria is a country that is blessed with an abundance of pristine alpine lakes, and the Landhaus Bergner Alm chalet is conveniently located in close proximity to many that will likely be on your Austrian bucket list. The beautiful Lake Zell (Zeller See), is just 5 minutes from the chalet, and can be easily reached by walking, cycling or by car if you prefer.
Lake Zell is a stunning destination to visit in any season. In summer the water based activities are endless - swim in the crystal clear waters, take a boat ride from shore to shore, or perhaps try stand-up paddle boarding. In winter the area transforms in to a winter wonderland, with easy access to a huge network of skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and the Schmittenhöhe mountains, with beautiful views over the lake and the surrounding mountainous landscape.
SWIMMING
Beaches & Lakeside Pools
Lake Zell is a beautiful place for swimming. There are countless entry points around the lake where you can go for a relaxing swim, and there are also numerous lake-side pools.
HIKING
Panoramic Mountain Views
The area around Lake Zell is a hiker's paradise, with a large network of trails of varying difficulty. The hikes offer impressive views of Lake Zell and the surrounding mountain.
OTHER
ALPINE LAKES
Lake Zell is just one of the many lakes near the Landhaus Bergner Alm chalet, and is a stunning place where one can spend countless days whilst on holiday here. There are so many other lakes in the area though, that we also recommend guests try and visit, as all of them offer a different experience. Guests often tell us that one holiday isn't enough at the chalet, and end up coming back year after year as there is just so much to do. Some of our personal favourite lakes to visit other than Lake Zell are the Jägersee, the Hintersee and the Zell Reservoir.
JÄGERSEE
LAKE
Picture Perfect
The Jägersee is a picturesque alpine lake that is surrounded by forest and rugged mountains. The waters are crystal clear and electric blue in colour, with swans often gliding across the surface. You can't really get more picture perfect! There is also a lakeside Alm on the water, that serves traditional Austrian food with a view. You can do a gentle walk around the shores of the Jägersee, or if you're feeling more energetic, you can also hike up to the Tappenkarsee which is another beautiful mountain lake at 1,200m. We love to hike up to this lake and go wild swimming!
ZELL
RESERVOIR
Mountain Panorama
The Plettsaukopf Reservoir is a small but stunning mountain lake at an altitude of 1,300m on the Schmittenhöhe mountain. From the Plettsaukopf Reservoir you can enjoy spectacular views towards the Kitzsteinhorn and the Hohe Tauern National park, as well as over Lake Zell. You can reach the lake by hiking or trail running in spring through to autumn, or by using the nearby City Express gondola. In winter you can ski tour to the lake which we love to do, especially to watch the sunrise. Read our blog post "Sunrise Ski Tour" on the Schmitten to find out more.
HINTERSEE
LAKE
Rugged Alpine Scenery
The Hintersee is just a short drive from the chalet. It's an untouched lake surrounded by rugged mountains and waterfalls with an abundance of wildlife! You can either drive to the lake, or instead park at the foot of the valley and walk to the Hintersee lake via a gorge. It's a place where you can sit back and really relax in nature. We love to pack a picnic and head to the lake for the afternoon. There is also an alm where you can stop for lunch, as well as a themed trail which is great for kids. For more information on other themed trails in the area, take a look at our 'Hiking' page.
